Summer Day this year will be at the Lough Neagh Fishermen’s Co-operative at Toomebridge on 14th June.  We have an excellent day planned, starting with an introduction to the eel fishery by the Chairman, Pat Close.  We will then tour the facilities and hear more about the history of the fishery and some of the complexities of the sector. Our guest speaker for the day is Conor Dolan.  As a Parasitologist at AFBI he is involved in eel health and welfare. Conor is a second year PHD student and has received an award for his presentation on the sustainable management of Lough Neagh eels.  This industry-focussed project is the first to be funded by the Lough Neagh Fisherman’s Co-operative Society.   He will also be discussing the link between Brexit and eels.  After our tour of the Fishery we will make our way to the WhiteRiver hotel next door to enjoy a delicious 3 course meal and yes, there is eel on the menu for those eager to try it.  In planning the day, some VetNI staff had a sneak preview – its going to be a fascinating day!

To find out more about our ‘Eel day’ have a look at our flyer here!

To book your place (only registered delegates allowed on the day) send us an email at [email protected]

NIVA members were given the fantastic opportunity to go and listen to Temple Grandin on the 11th May 2017.  We were given a limited amount of places by Queens University Belfast and found these places proved popular.  Everyone who went to the lecture was blown away by how amazing Temples lecture was and noted how informative the question and answer session proved to be.

Her topics on the evening included:

  • Her unique perspective on the humane treatment of livestock for slaughter.
  • Beef cattle behaviour during handling.
  • Environmental enrichment for pigs
  • Design of animal handling facilities, especially visual distractions and other environmental distractions
  • Impact of good handling on production
  • Familiarisation of animals to environmental distractions
  • Simple ways of measuring animal welfare
  • The importance of not allowing “bad” to become “normal” (in terms of welfare, breeding etc. – e.g. brachycephalic dogs, unacceptable percentages of lame dairy cows)

5 CVO’s & an inflatable cow climb a mountain for charity ‘send a cow’

May 22, 2017 By Rachel-VETNI

5 CVOs and an inflatable cow made the journey up Slieve Donard at the weekend for the charity ‘Send a Cow’.

Send a Cow is a International Development charity with a difference. They’ve been working with some of Africa’s poorest families for nearly 30 years, helping over 1.3 million people work their way out of extreme poverty. They provide livestock, tools, seeds and training as part of a programme giving people the hope and means to establish a future for themselves, their families and their wider communities

They are nearly at their target but would love to smash it! Donations can be made at http://bit.ly/2p1a6kN.
