NIVA AGM 2017

On Wednesday 25th January 2017 the annual NIVA AGM will take place in the Seagoe Hotel, Portadown.  If you are a BVA member there is a BVA NI Branch AGM at 7pm.  If you are a NIVA member there is a NIVA AGM at 7.45pm and for all Vets and guests, there is a presentation by Prof. Cook titled ‘all data great and small: Vet practice in the digital age’.

Watch out for wildlife crime!!!

OPERATION RAPTOR – Put a STOP to the poisoning, Shooting and trapping of birds of prey!  The Partnership for action against wildlife crime in Northern Ireland (PAW NI) would like to remind veterinary staff that birds of prey are protected by law in Northern Ireland and suspected incidents of wildlife crime against birds of prey.  These crimes should be reported to the PSNI by calling 101.

Not your average CPD day! Omagh Day 2017!

Omagh day is not your average CPD day!  Held in the post-mortem laboratory at AFBI in January every year, its ever increasing popularity is due to the unique ‘competition’ of four local practitioners talking on their subject of choice and traditionally judged by the President of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons who, this year, will be Dr Christopher Tufnell (RCVS).  The beautiful Frank Mullan trophy will be presented to the chosen winner and this years subjects include:  Keyhole spay/surgery, AI Mares, Enucleations in cows and saving money and the environment – Anaesthesia.

The talks will be followed by the AVSPNI AGM (members only) and three course dinner at the Silverbirch Hotel. 

Registrations are open NOW and due to the popularity of this event it is advised to book your place quickly.  Last registrations will be taken on the 9th January 2017.

NIVA quiz night winners!

Fantastic night had by all at the NIVA quiz night in the Tannery, Moira last Wednesday!  Chris from our kind sponsors Boehringer Ingelheim was definitely the top man for the job of quizmaster and the attention to detail was not unnoticed!  The 8 rounds proved that we have quite a competitive network of vets, who perhaps could have done with a bit of general knowledge revision before the event judging by some of the scores!  However, we did have one clear winner with the winning team from Riada Vets – THE KPI’s!

BVA NORTHERN IRELAND DINNER 2016

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) Annual Northern Ireland Dinner was held in the Long Gallery, Parliament Buildings, on the evening of Thursday 24th November.   This annual event once again provided an excellent opportunity for vets and others in the animal health sector to engage and discuss issues of animal welfare, animal health and food safety of particular importance to Northern Ireland with other key representatives, political leaders and opinion formers. Mr Patsy McGlone MLA acted as the Stormont host and NI Branch President, Seamus O’Kane welcomed members and guests before introducing the two speakers. 

Gudrun Ravetz, the BVA President spoke first , covering a wide range of topics including Brexit, animal health, animal welfare, R&D and the veterinary “family”. Her speech can be found here: BVA President speech.
