Victoria Roberts set out to be a vet with the objective of improving the welfare of backyard poultry as it is a rising hobby, vets now needing this specialized information to cope with the increasing number of pet chickens that are presented to them, diseases and disorders often caused by owner ignorance.  She is coming to talk at our AVSPNI evening meeting to give our vets the confidence on how to deal with a sick chicken effectively with the subject ‘oh no its a sick chicken, how to gain confidence to examine and treat her’.

The meeting will begin with a delicious supper at 7.15pm so why not come straight from surgery to get a good feed before some great CPD.  (Free to AVSPNI members).

Come join AVSPNI for the Spring Large Animal meeting on Wednesday 26th April 2017 in the Glenavon House Hotel at 7.15pm. 

Phillipa Page is our speaker for the subject of ‘Engaging with sheep farmers: How Can Flock Health Planning be Viable for Vets and Farmers?’.  Phillipa has been in large animal practice for over 7 and a half years and before that was in mixed practice.  Whilst in her large animal role, she has started sheep training workshops, newsletters, discussion groups etc. and she and her husband commercially farm 400 ewes producing fat lambs which has helped bridge the veterinary and sheep farmer understanding.

Phillipa will also be talking about ‘An update on Ovine Pulmonary Adenocarcinoma -Jaagsiekte’ as a bonus topic for the evening.

Claire qualified as a veterinary nurse in small animal practice in North London in 2001 and went on to work as a senior nurse at The Queen Mother Hospital for Animals. Whilst in this role she gained the Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (medical), and worked mainly in anaesthesia and diagnostic imaging. During this time she was responsible for the endoscopy unit in the hospital and attended a human endoscopy technician’s course to broaden her knowledge in this area. Later Claire was a head nurse at Wood Street Veterinary Hospital in north London and developed an interest in laparoscopic surgery as well as flexible endoscopy.

Claire always had an interest in VN training and education and having been a head nurse for a number of years moved into full time lecturing at a college in Staffordshire before joining The College of Animal Welfare in 2013 where she is now centre manager at Potters Bar.  She has achieved a Post Graduate Diploma in Veterinary Education at the Royal Veterinary College and is currently working towards her MSc research project.

Claire will be giving lectures to our Vet Nurses at the Armagh City Hotel in May.  Her topics include:  An introduction to emergency nursing, Pain assessment and analgesia, nursing the feline patient, nursing care for patients with tubes going in and tubes going out, nursing the haemorrhaging patient and blood transfusions care and Martha, a traumatic case.

Sarah Caney is an RCVS Specialist in Feline Medicine and enjoys seeing a mixture of first opinion and referral feline patients.  She is internationally recognised as one of only eight veterinary specialists in feline medicine working in the UK.  Alongside her clinical work and publishing, Dr Caney has worked for many years with the UK cat charity, the Feline Advisory Bureau (FAB). Her work with FAB includes chairing their feline expert panel which lobbies organisations for better cat care.

Sarah will be lecturing in at our up and coming AVSPNI Small animal conference in May and her topics include ‘Cat friendly tips, blood pressure assessment in cats, preventive healthcare in cats, chronic kidney disease, osteoarthritis and cognitive dysfunction syndrome in the older cat, the anorexic cat, hyperthyroidism and Setting up and running successful feline chronic kidney disease clinics’.
